The technique of etching was perfected in the middle of the fifteenth century, in Italy and in Germany at the same time. Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Gainsborough, Rembrandt van Rijn and Albrecht Durer all produced works of intaglio in one form or another. Judith Hall is recognized for her achievement in this difficult medium.
